Ann Arbor and The Ann Arbor Art Fair

Ann Arbor Art Fair

The location of the main campus of the renowned University of Michigan, brings so much culture and entertainment to Ann Arbor. The university staff lectures on nearly every subject. The music school is continually providing musical concerts, and individual artists perform for the enjoyment of the community. Many lectures on everyday topics of interest are given. The country’s largest football stadium is in Ann Arbor and whether you like football or not, you cannot miss the activities in downtown Ann Arbor on football Saturday.

The Ann Arbor Art Fair held in July every year is one of the largest of its kind in the country. The streets are lined with exhibits and eager people admiring the artists’ work. The atmosphere is also a bit of a carnival atmosphere, but people really enjoy it. The dates for the 58th  Annual Ann Arbor Art Fair are set! The 20th through the 23rd of July, Ann Arbor will host and estimated 400,000 people. The event is free and spread out over 29 city blocks in downtown Ann Arbor. The Ann Arbor Art Fair is comprised of four independently juried nonprofit art fairs taking place at once.

In an Ann Arbor State of Mind: The Cube

Ann Arbor Cube

What State of Mind are You In?

Nothing can explain the complexity and artistic edge of Ann Arbor except the University of Michigan’s Cube, otherwise known as Endover. One look at it and you’ll find yourself contemplating an endless loop of thoughts. You might walk up to it and trace your fingers along its straight edges, but nonetheless you’ll continue to ponder how Endover remains standing on its pointed side. This is the atmosphere Ann Arbor has continued to pursue, not only within the University of Michigan’s campus grounds, but throughout downtown. Nothing has to be normal. Any town has shops visitors can peruse and look around, but only Ann Arbor has built-in fairy doors for their special guests. Only in Ann Arbor do you find alley bars with decorated murals plastered on their outside walls.

Ann Arbor Fairy Door

This is what the cube represents in Ann Arbor. It’s a testament to the city’s artistic creativity and fun-filled atmosphere. It’s a town that you can sit along a street-side cafe and muse about daily life. You can watch residents shop around or you can join in the fun. Our suggestion is to head to one of the Wolverine’s football games and feel the excitement of the community. Nowhere in Ann Arbor is life boring and normal. Living here is all about relaxation and fun.

With all this said, however; the more important question is which state of mind are you in?

Ann Arbor Michigan Community Amenity: Crisler Arena, Ann Arbor, MI

Go Michigan! 🙂 The University of Michigan has some great sporting venues in Ann Arbor!

Situated right next door to U of M Football Stadium there is a great arena which is the home to Michigan Wolverines Basketball teams! Crisler Arena.

Crisler Arena was constructed back in the mid 1960’s with groundbreaking in 1965 and opening its doors to spectators in 1967 it was designed by Dan Dworsky.  The arena has been renovated three times since opening: the first time in 1998; the second time in 2001; and the third just recently this year, 2011.  After its most recent renovation its capacity is now around 12,700 people.

It is the home to the University of Michigan men’s and women’s basketball teams and was named after Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler, head football coach at Michigan from 1938 to 1947.  Fritz remained athletic director until his retirement in 1968.  As for its tagline, the arena is often called “The House that Cazzie Built.”  This is in reference to legendary player Cazzie Russell who starred on Michigan teams that won three consecutive Big Ten Conference titles from 1964 to 1966.  It was Cazzie’s popularity which caused the fanbase to outgrow its old home, Yost Fieldhouse (now Yost Ice Arena).

Sports aside, the arena has also hosted numerous concerts over the years perhaps most famously, the opening show of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s The River Tour.

Ann Arbor Michigan Community: Hill Auditorium, University of Michigan local community performing arts center

Ann Arbor benefits so much from having the University of Michigan at the heart of the City. The University enhances the already wonderfully diverse cultural amenities that Ann Arbor has.

When it comes to the performing arts, there is an infamous facility in the center of the city which is coveted by many and has played host to numerous famous celebrities.

Hill Auditorium, at 825 North University Avenue (corner of North University and South Thayer Streets) in Ann Arbor is a beautiful building that was constructed back in 1913 by noted architectural firm Kahn and Wilby. The auditorium is so well known it is even included on the Visit Ann Arbor website!

The renowned concert hall was inaugurated at the 20th Ann Arbor May Festival, and has continued to be the site of thousands of concerts. Stars who have performed here include Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, Tori Amos, Chris Rock and more! Boasting superb acoustics there is no question to why people love to perform here.

Just under 10 years ago in May 2002 the Auditorium underwent an 18 month long $38.6 million renovation which updated the infrastructure and restored much of the interior to its former, original splendor. Outside the building the brick paving and stone retaining walls were reworked, inside there was the creation of additional restrooms, the replacement of seating and more. Hill Auditorium reopened after refurbishment in 2004.

The auditorium can hold just over 3,500 people and since refurbishment has up to date audio-visual equipment meaning that those who are performing can have their performance use cutting edge technology.

This is definitely a great community resource that is loved by Ann Arbor residents and visitors!
