ANN ARBOR PF CHANG’S

urlAfter a long day of shopping at Briarwood Mall or exploring Downtown, Ann Arbor and enjoying Michigan’s beautiful summer weather,  I am sure you will want to end your day with a memorable dining experience! My favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor for Authentic Chinese Cuisine is PF Chang’s! located right outside of Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I was shocked at how many different small plates I could order! I was accustom to the traditional dining experience but PF Chang’s certainly changes up the pace! I order the Lettuce Wraps & The Ahi Tuna Appetizer and they are both one of a kind! PF Chang’s is committed to bringing something new to their guests tables. They want to create relationships with their customers and serve meals that are not forgotten. The new Ann Arbor restaurant opened in December of 2014 and has been a success ever since. PF Chang’s encourages their guests to to try new dishes and share the tasty flavors in a community dining style! The horse symbolizes the original forbidden city of china, which was built for China’s first emperor Qin shi huangdi. The horses were protection/security for the locals.

Fairy Door Popularity in Ann Arbor and the Surrounding Communities

Can you imagine finding a tiny little door about 6 to 8 inches high mounted anywhere on your property? Fairy Door Lovers can certainly imagine having just such an adorable, little, tiny door embellish their property, especially in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Why would a business like to have a Fairy Door?  Because they are so cute. They draw you in and make you feel happy. Some doors are inside the buildings and when you see them for the first time you think of all the creativity and imagination it took someone to construct such a remarkable little door and you smile. I always want to open the tiny little door to see what’s inside.

FairyDoorPicJonathan B. Wright, of Urban-Fairies.com has been living with fairy doors in his Ann Arbor home since the mid- 1990’s, when the kids in his wife’s day-care discovered one under the stairway. Jonathan installed the first door at Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea in Ann Arbor back in 2005. Within one week the whimsical little door was removed and once again the door appeared.  Read: Opening the secrets behind Ann Arbor’s famed fairy doors, Jen McKee, .  And See more pics of the little portals around Ann Arbor in an article written by Messy Nessy, The Town with a Subculture of Secret Tiny Doors.  The doors flourished between 2005 and 2008 because of Jonathan and other Fairy Door Lovers. New doors have opened and some old doors have closed over the years.

The doors continue to pop up in Ann Arbor and in neighboring towns.  No matter who creates the door they each begin with a lot of thought and creativity.  For instance, the door at the Ann Arbor Public Library is located on the Fairy Tale and Folklore bookshelf inside the library. Hans Christian Andersen would be so happy knowing children might then be reading his collection of 80 Fairy Tales for children.  How about a “Giggle” logo that can be found on the Fairy Door at the Google office in Ann Arbor.

fairy sghtingWhat do people leave at the doorstep of these adorable little doors?  Good-natured children and adults will leave pennies, notes, trinkets, tiny toys and feathers, any other tiny objects.  The carpenters building the fairy doors will construct them so the doors open and shut, out of materials such as wood, metal, ceramic, and brick. Some will even have a sash that actually pulls up and down letting you know if the store is open or closed.

Popularity is growing for the Fairy Doors beyond the city of Ann Arbor. If you know where there is a public Fairy Door hiding – let us know where it is so we can share in your joy.

Doors were meant to be opened.  Let us help you open the door to your new home. We can assist you through the entire buying process. To search for your new home go to:  www.HomeSearchAnnArbor.com.  If you are thinking selling, contact the TOTH TEAM for further at 734.426.6669 or [email protected].

Kathy Toth and Team Tour The Charles Baird Carillon in Burton Memorial Tower on U of M Main Campus

20140925_103637Kathy Toth & Team toured the Charles Baird Carillon located in the Burton Memorial Tower on The University of Michigan central campus Thursday, 9.25.14.burton towerSeptember 25, 2014.  The tour was worth every minute. We all enjoyed hearing the history of the Carillon from Kipp Cortez, the University Carillonneur.

Charles Baird, a University of Michigan alumnus, and The University of Michigan’s first athletic director, donated the Bells to the University of Michigan. This amazing instrument,The Charles M. Baird Carillon, is one of the largest instruments in North America. 9.25.2014 kip cortez President Marian Burton, in his 1921 commencement address, suggested the erection of a bell tower to commemorate the 236 University students who lost their lives during World War I.  Four years after Marian Burton’s death in 1921 The Secretary of the University, Shirley Smith, revived the plan to Build the bell tower. With the onset of the Depression, plans were put on hold and then revived in 1935. Please read the full History of the Burton Memorial Tower.

Students and residents within earshot can hear the Largest Bell, the ‘Bourdon Bell’, strike the hour every day.  This bourdon bell weighs 12 tons.

University of Michigan Charles Baird Carillon Facts:

  1. Designed by Albert Kahn
  2. 212 Feet High Structure
  3. Total of 53 Bells the smallest bell 4 ½ octaves higher weighs 21 pounds.
  4. The Charles Baird Carillon was dedicated, December 4, 1936.
  5. The bells are housed on the tenth floor in a 40-foot high chamber that provides ample openings to maximize their sound.Carillon
  6. Carillons are instruments consisting of at least 2 full octaves – 24 bells in chromatic progression.
  7. The keyboard consists of wooden levers and foot pedals played with fists and feet.
  8. The levers connect to hammers inside the bell, when the levers are pressed the hammer strikes the bell and rings it.
  9. The bells are programmed to ring every quarter-hour. This takes us back to the Renaissance, when city-dwellers depended on church bells to tell time.

In 2011, the carillon underwent a complete restoration, returning the original highest two octaves of bells and the original clavier.

The University of Michigan is fortunate enough to not only have one Carillon, but two!  The University of Michigan added a second carillon in 1996 on North Campus. The Ann and Robert H. Lurie Carillon and consists of 60 bells. The Robert and Ann Lurie Carillon was a gift to the School of Engineering from the Robert and Ann Lurie Family Foundation, The Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry of Asten, The Netherlands, cast the bells. In any case, the carillons are unique and an important part of the Ann Arbor Community.

The next time you hear the bells, stop, listen, and enjoy hearing one of the largest instruments in North America.  Tomorrow bring your blankets, and capture the sound of the bells.

Pacific Rim Restaurant in Ann Arbor for Delicious Asian Cuisine

We just recently enjoyed a wonderful meal and dining experience at the Pacific Rim by Kona in downtown Ann Arbor.  I enjoyed every aspect of the meal.  The menu was extensive. The food was beautifully presented.  The ambiance was great, and you can actually hear each other’s conversations at the table.  The wait staff was very professional and we knew they really wanted us to enjoy the entire dining experience.

Their contemporary pan-Asian cuisine  draws from the best of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai food.  Seasonal fresh ingredients are used in preparing each dish.  We had the Steak with Vegetables on Rice and the Sablefish along with Salad and Desert. (Menu) The food looked so good and tasted great, too.

College Football Bowl Game Snacks to Enjoy at Home

Bring the energy of a college football game into your own home with a more intimate setting … by hosting a bowl game at home. Celebrate the University of Michigan Wolverines with an appropriate menu of delicious and easy-to-prepare snacks for your guests. Here are a few ideas to get your Ann Arbor home party started:

Ann Arbor Football Snacks
by Yuri Long

Hearty Potato Cake With Ham

Potatoes are the perfect cold weather food. They keep easily and have a comforting texture. Fill up your guests with a hearty potato cake. Cut potatoes into quarter inch rounds. Layer a buttered casserole dish with potato rounds, thinly sliced ham, and heavy cream. Top with parmesan. Bake the entire dish for forty minutes. Slice the resulting cake into bite sized chunks and serve to guests.

Chicken Fingers

Chicken fingers are the ideal finger food. Make some in advance for your guests. Chop up chicken pieces. Coat with a mixture of egg wash and flour. Fry in hot oil. Make them even more special with the use of dipping sauces. Make a quick honey mustard by adding a few drops of honey to your favorite type of mustard. Serve along with ketchup you have spiced up by adding some of your favorite spices like freshly ground peppercorn.

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp

Shrimp are an easy snack that appeals to a wide variety of tastes. Shrimp that have already been peeled and boiled are widely available in many Ann Arbor area markets. Defrost them in advance. Wrap bacon around the shrimp and secure them with a toothpick. Place them under the broiler of your oven for a few minutes until the bacon becomes crisp. Serve with a cooling dip. Drain plain yoghurt overnight with a cheesecloth. Empty into a pan. Mix the results with olive oil and minced garlic.

Super Quick Nutritious Vegetables

Provide your guests with an immediate nibble once they come in your house. Cut up broccoli, carrots, turnips and green bell peppers into bite sized slices. Boil water. Place all of the vegetables in a colander. Pour the boiling water over the vegetables to blanch them. Serve with a dip of chopped garlic, chopped tomatoes and olive oil for a healthy boost.

Roast Chickpeas

Chickpeas make an easy and quick snack. Surprise your friends with a roasted version. Open up a can of chick peas. Drain them of all water as carefully as possible. Sprinkle on spices such as cumin or paprika. Place them in the oven for ten minutes. The result is a crispy snack with an unexpected bite.

Enjoy College Football Snacks

Gathering together with friends to watch as the Michigan Wolverines win yet another game is a great way to embrace the fall season. Make your party even more special by presenting your friends with easy to eat snacks they will all love.
