Ann Arbor Michigan Community: Hill Auditorium, University of Michigan local community performing arts center

Ann Arbor benefits so much from having the University of Michigan at the heart of the City. The University enhances the already wonderfully diverse cultural amenities that Ann Arbor has.

When it comes to the performing arts, there is an infamous facility in the center of the city which is coveted by many and has played host to numerous famous celebrities.

Hill Auditorium, at 825 North University Avenue (corner of North University and South Thayer Streets) in Ann Arbor is a beautiful building that was constructed back in 1913 by noted architectural firm Kahn and Wilby. The auditorium is so well known it is even included on the Visit Ann Arbor website!

The renowned concert hall was inaugurated at the 20th Ann Arbor May Festival, and has continued to be the site of thousands of concerts. Stars who have performed here include Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, Tori Amos, Chris Rock and more! Boasting superb acoustics there is no question to why people love to perform here.

Just under 10 years ago in May 2002 the Auditorium underwent an 18 month long $38.6 million renovation which updated the infrastructure and restored much of the interior to its former, original splendor. Outside the building the brick paving and stone retaining walls were reworked, inside there was the creation of additional restrooms, the replacement of seating and more. Hill Auditorium reopened after refurbishment in 2004.

The auditorium can hold just over 3,500 people and since refurbishment has up to date audio-visual equipment meaning that those who are performing can have their performance use cutting edge technology.

This is definitely a great community resource that is loved by Ann Arbor residents and visitors!

Kerrytown Concert House Presents Freddy Cole

Described as “overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive” by the New York Times, 2011 Grammy nominee Freddy Cole brings his Quartet to Ann Arbor for two sets September 23.

Cole doesn’t apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat “King” Cole.  There are certain unmistakable similarites.  He plays and sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat.  Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even.  He has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his brother.

This concert is part of KCH’s Kerrytown Club series, a chance to enjoy great musical moments in a nightclub setting. Call early to reserve café tables in the front of the hall. A cash bar will be available.

Ann Arbor Art Fairs 2012 enjoyed by Ann Arbor Community

Kathy Toth and Team, Keller Williams Realty| 734.426.6669| Ann Arbor Art Fairs 2012

Ann Arbor Street Art Fair 2012 Another Success  – All 4 Fairs

Now in its 53rd year, the Ann Arbor Art Fair, established back in 1960 contains more than just visual art – it also includes live entertainment too! Each year the Original Art Fair, State Street Area Art Fair, Summer Art Fair and South University Art Fair attracts around half a million people from across the nation and beyond!

The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the Original (734-994-5260) is at Ingalls Mall between North University and W. Washington.

The State Street Area Art Fair (734-663-6511) is in the shopping districts around State and Liberty.

The Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair (734-662-3382) has a downtown section on Main and Liberty and a campus section on S. State.

Ann Arbor’s South University Art Fair (734-663-5300) occupies most of the South University business district and adjoining East University and Church.

For comprehensive information on accommodations, parking, featured artists, maps and more, visit go to Artfairs.visitannarbor.org.

This years original art fair was held between July July 18 through July 21, 2012 and attracted large crowds.  Art wasn’t just on display, but also available for purchase. Everything from jewelry, 2D and 3D-mixed media, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics and more was on offer! The fair also offered plenty of free activities too including some mini art workshops by artists showing how their art is created.

Each year the event is a chance for new/up and coming artists to exhibit and get recognized. The fair is great for Ann Arbor’s economy too; A survey study on the Ann Arbor Art Fair had been conducted by Power Marketing back in 2008 which concluded that the fair had a large economic impact on the surrounding area, not just through selling art! Hotels made $5 million. Dining establishments made $25.2 million, and $48.7 million went toward shopping during the fair. Wow!

In addition to the new artists, there were some old favorites such as Mr. B, who has performed his boogie-woogie piano at the fair for three decades, he played all day, every day on North University near Ingalls Mall. Definitely a sound that needs to be heard.  While you are at the University of Michigan Union on State Street take a rest at the Union and stop outside and get your picture at the Cube, also known as “Endover” by artist Tony Rosenthal.

So as you can see, Ann Arbor is such a unique place to call home!

Did you visit this years Art Fair? If so, we welcome your comments, if you live in the community, we want to hear what you think of your neighborhood and welcome your input to improve this Ann Arbor Area information.
