Gallery Project Presents Food for Thought

Gallery Project presents Food for Thought, a multimedia exhibit in which over 27 local, regional, and national artists explore the complex and varied relationships people in American culture have with food.  Eating is one of life’s universal activities.  At its most basic level, food is essential to all life; without it, we would perish.  But food is more complex than that.  How food is defined, produced, processed and delivered is hightly intertwined with basic cultural values around money, power, politics, even religion.  Food defines our past, our present, and our future.  The opening reception is Friday, Nov. 4 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Ann Arbor Lewis Jewelers is 90 Years Old

Lewis Jewelers is 90 years old.  Wow!

People want to do business and spend time with people they like and trust. You build that type of friendship/business relationship over time, through common interests and by who you know.  So I was thrilled to be invited to Lewis Jewelers annual dinner at Weber’s to mingle with people I have come to trust and some great Ann Arborites.

It was nice to see some familiar faces, David and Rosemary Lewis, DK, Fred, Jonathan, Keith, Janice, Lucinda, Heidi, Susan, Beverly, Bonnie, and Ron. The staff is salaried so you never feel pushed into buying something.

I was very interested to learn about the cutting techniques explained by Brian from Hearts on Fire.  They say they have the world’s most perfectly cut diamond.  These diamond crystals are taken from the mine and cut and polished at 100x magnification, 10 times the industry standard making them “dance” even in low light.  I tried on a bracelet fit for a Queen, alas, not for my budget.

According to Hearts on Fire, the cut is the single most important factor in determining the beauty of a diamond.  Their diamonds had more facets and reflect more light than the standard cut diamond.  They only choose diamonds from conflict-free sources that are compliant with international trade laws.  What an amazing interactive class I had.

Lisa from Roberto Coin was very kind to let me wear a stunning pave diamond necklace from their collection and then to sport a black diamond necklace, which I wore through dinner and felt like royalty, or imagined what that felt like.  This Italian jewelry designer hides a ruby in each piece, allowing direct contact with the skin.  It is believed to promote long life blessedwith health and happiness.

I promise to return to Lewis Jewelers, a place I trust, with people who have a passion for their customers and their product lines.  There is a good reason it is always busy there.  If you have not visited them at 2000 W. Stadium Blvd, I suggest you do so.  The web is www.LewisJewelers.com or call them 734-994-5111.

A Special Thanks for a Wonderful Evening Guys!   I am so happy to call Ann Arbor my home.

Saline Dan’s Downtown Tavern is Local Watering Hole

After visiting the Spotted Dog Winery for a Private Toth Team Party, a few of us walked across the street to get a

tasty burger.  Having never been, I was open to the experience.  It was dark, busy and crowded.  We all had burgers that were very good and huge!  The service was courteous, prompt and the clientel was  mixed with a couple making out at the bar, some families, lots of men watching big screen sports, single folks, etc.

All in all, it was just what we needed and we enjoyed our evening there.  Be sure to get a burger at Dan’s.  Give this restaurant a try or maybe this is your hang out?

What do you think of this spot?  We are not your watering hole experts, just your Ann Arbor Area Realtors; let us hlep you find a dream home and get the most bang for your buck when selling your Ann Arbor Area home.

Ann Arbor Michigan Community: Chelsea Center for the Arts, Chelsea Michigan

The arts are so important to local communities, as we just wrote about Hill Auditorium in downtown Ann Arbor, readers who are looking to move to other parts of the Ann Arbor metro area will be excited to learn that they don’t have to just go into downtown Ann Arbor to enjoy the arts, other surrounding communities often have their own local arts.

Look at Chelsea, Michigan, for instance. Chelsea is home to the fun non-profit community organization the “Chelsea Center for the Arts” or CCA for short. The CCA’s mission statement is “Developing, fostering and promoting music and visual art in Chelsea, Michigan and the surrounding communities.”

The Chelsea Center for the Arts, located at 400 Congdon St., Chelsea, MI 48118 encourages you to discover new skills, refine existing ones, meet friends old and new and participate in diverse music and art programs led by hands on instructors. The Center was founded back in 1995 and serves the City of Chelsea and the surrounding areas in Washtenaw County. What started out to be a very niche organization serving the few has now become a true community asset and amenity and is a pillar in the local area. They even have their own Facebook Page!

When it comes to music lessons, Chelsea’s Center for the Arts is second to none in the area! Highly-trained instructors offer private and group music study for all ages and abilities. Most instructors hold Masters of Music degrees and have several years of teaching experience. Lessons offered include:

  • Piano
  • Guitar, violin and cello
  • Voice / singing
  • Clarinet, flute, recorder

As for visual arts, there are creative visual art instructors who teach, encourage and inspire you to have fun and experiment, there are classes, workshops and more in the following fields:

  • Painting
  • Pottery
  • Sculpture
  • Photography
  • Drawing

Of course for those that might not want to take lessons in music or art there is always the other side to the art world, that is the enjoyment of art by others! There is, whats called the Center Gallery at the CCA which showcases fine art by instructors, students and other local artists. The gallery features paintings, photography, stoneware, sculptures, jewelry and much more! Best yet, the exhibitions are free and open to the public. Just think if you did take a class you could have your work exhibited!

The Chelsea Center for the Arts is definitely a great community asset and helps benefit the lives of residents in the area. It is no wonder that Chelsea is such a desirable community to live in and a top relocation destination.

We welcome your comments, if you live in the community, we want to hear what you think of your neighborhood and welcome your input to improve this Ann Arbor Area information.
