The Ark Presents: The Persuasions

The Persuasions began singing together in Brooklyn in the mid-1960s, and two of their original members, Joe Russell and Jimmy Hayes, are still part of the group. They’ve applied their trademark harmonies to songs by everyone from Sam Cooke to Frank Zappa, who helped their early career along. Ambient musician Brian Eno, whom you might not expect to be a fan, summed up their appeal this way: “Afro-American music—the great fusion that gave us jazz, blues and rock and roll—is captured in its purest form by the Persuasions. For decades they have been taking a-cappella music to ever-new heights, reminding generations of musicians that the human voice is the subtlest and most powerful of all instruments. I feel honoured to have been able to invite them to play here in England, and to watch yet another generation fall under their spell.” And critic Greil Marcus once called their style “a perfect marriage of passion and intelligence.” Come into the house of a cappella!

The Ark Presents: Bill Kirchen

Bill Kirchen is an Ann Arbor-bred guitar god, a Telecaster titan who whirls through a whole gallery of country and rock styles over the course of an evening. After a stint as lead guitarist with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, he’s gone on to an acclaimed solo career, and when he returns to town at the holidays his concerts turn into joyous reunions celebrating the glory days of the Ann Arbor honky-tonk scene, with special guests often on hand. Some things haven’t changed–the Austin American-Statesman recently praised his “no-nonsense diesel guitar attack, powered by great booming, bottom-heavy licks still covered with axle grease.” But Bill has evolved into a very skillful rockabilly and country songwriter as well, one who praised his trademark Telecaster guitar as “born at the junction of form and function.” His live shows are not to be missed!

Huron River Day Geocache

Join the Huron River Watershed Coucil and Michigan Geocachers for an adventure  to learn the rewards of this outdoor sport. The basic idea of geocaching is to set up caches outdoors and share their locations on the internet. GPS users then employ the location coordinates to find the caches. It is deceptively easy, because it is one thing to see where an item is and a totally different challenge to actually get there and then find the cache. Beginners can learn the basics of this adventurous sport. Find all three and receive a beautiful “Huron History Mystery Tour” coin for your collection or earn your first one. Bring your own GPS if you have it. If you do not have one, there will be loaners. For more information about geocaching visit www.mi-geocaching.org.

Ann Arbor Michigan Community Amenity: Crisler Arena, Ann Arbor, MI

Go Michigan! 🙂 The University of Michigan has some great sporting venues in Ann Arbor!

Situated right next door to U of M Football Stadium there is a great arena which is the home to Michigan Wolverines Basketball teams! Crisler Arena.

Crisler Arena was constructed back in the mid 1960’s with groundbreaking in 1965 and opening its doors to spectators in 1967 it was designed by Dan Dworsky.  The arena has been renovated three times since opening: the first time in 1998; the second time in 2001; and the third just recently this year, 2011.  After its most recent renovation its capacity is now around 12,700 people.

It is the home to the University of Michigan men’s and women’s basketball teams and was named after Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler, head football coach at Michigan from 1938 to 1947.  Fritz remained athletic director until his retirement in 1968.  As for its tagline, the arena is often called “The House that Cazzie Built.”  This is in reference to legendary player Cazzie Russell who starred on Michigan teams that won three consecutive Big Ten Conference titles from 1964 to 1966.  It was Cazzie’s popularity which caused the fanbase to outgrow its old home, Yost Fieldhouse (now Yost Ice Arena).

Sports aside, the arena has also hosted numerous concerts over the years perhaps most famously, the opening show of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s The River Tour.
