Ann Arbor Michigan Community Amenity: Crisler Arena, Ann Arbor, MI

Go Michigan! 🙂 The University of Michigan has some great sporting venues in Ann Arbor!

Situated right next door to U of M Football Stadium there is a great arena which is the home to Michigan Wolverines Basketball teams! Crisler Arena.

Crisler Arena was constructed back in the mid 1960’s with groundbreaking in 1965 and opening its doors to spectators in 1967 it was designed by Dan Dworsky.  The arena has been renovated three times since opening: the first time in 1998; the second time in 2001; and the third just recently this year, 2011.  After its most recent renovation its capacity is now around 12,700 people.

It is the home to the University of Michigan men’s and women’s basketball teams and was named after Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler, head football coach at Michigan from 1938 to 1947.  Fritz remained athletic director until his retirement in 1968.  As for its tagline, the arena is often called “The House that Cazzie Built.”  This is in reference to legendary player Cazzie Russell who starred on Michigan teams that won three consecutive Big Ten Conference titles from 1964 to 1966.  It was Cazzie’s popularity which caused the fanbase to outgrow its old home, Yost Fieldhouse (now Yost Ice Arena).

Sports aside, the arena has also hosted numerous concerts over the years perhaps most famously, the opening show of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s The River Tour.
