Chelsea Michigan Community: Learn More About Chelsea, MI thanks to the Chelsea Area Historical Society

Welcome to Chelsea! Many people who are looking to relocate to Ann Arbor, while exploring the area, fall in love with Chelsea!

Located just outs side of Ann Arbor to the west along I-94, living in Chelsea, Michigan is a great choice that many people make. They want the convenience of city living but live in a small town environment.

But what about it’s history? Chelsea is proud to have a long and exciting history which is promoted by the Chelsea Area Historical Society. This great organization researches the history of Chelsea and the surrounding townships of Sylvan, Lima, Lyndon, and Sharon. They are a great education resource for kids and adults who are interested in local history.

The organization are very welcoming and have many different activities available for those who are interested to learn more about the area.

How about the Oak Grove Walking Tour which is a guided talking tour of the Oak Grove Cemetery? This took place earlier this month and asides from being spooky in the run up to Halloween it is an informative tour.

Or you could look at the Chelsea Area Historical Society Museum which opened back in February 2011. The museum is open Saturdays from 11am – 3:00pm, at 20650 W. Old US-12, the house next to Thompson’s Pizzeria. It is a chance to stop in and experience the history of Chelsea. Current exhibits include a limited time only display of Glazier Stove Co. stoves, artifacts from Chelsea Fairs of the past, rare photos, and patents along with Chelsea advertising, pioneer history, exquisite china, and much more! Admission is a suggested donation. The museum is also going all out for the holidays this year as it will be decorated for the holiday season and, in the spirit of the Christmas season, is showcasing a vintage toy exhibit on December 3rd!

The Historical Society was founded back in 1974 is also always looking for new members. They offer public history lectures throughout the year as well as other special events and fundraisers.

Chelsea features a rich history that is just waiting to be discovered by those new to the area!

Of course, Chelsea also has some great amenities like Zou Zou’s coffee shop, the Chelsea Center for Arts which we recently wrote about as well as the renowned Purple Rose Theater. Chelsea definitely has it all and is the perfect relocation destination!
