What would the Dexter Opera House and the Dexter Mill have in common? The Dexter Opera House was the first meeting place for the original ‘start-up’ of the Dexter Agricultural Association. They opened their doors on January 1, 1920. Most of us know this location today as the Dexter Mill on Central Street in Dexter, Michigan.
Over the years the Dexter Mill has evolved with different names starting with the Dexter Agricultural Association; then the Dexter Co-Op Company; to the Washtenaw Farm and Garden Center and finally in 1979 the name changed to what we recognize now as the Dexter Mill.
Of course, the inventory has changed over the 92 years of operation, but the service has remained the same friendly service Dexter residents have known for generations. Yes, even livestock was sold in the early days as well as lumber and even kitchen cabinets and plumbing supplies. Today they offer a tremendous variety of feed, grain, organic fertilizers and animal supplies. They specialize in selling farm and garden supplies, grains, plants, gardening tools, pet supplies, and a sundry of fascinating bird feeders and even top of the line rabbit hutches. Need a rake, hoe, shovel, salt lick, or a special brush for your precious pet – the Dexter Mill is the place to go. When thinking of a perfect Mother’s Day or Father’s Day Gift – Don’t think twice, stop in at the Dexter Mill and you will find the perfect gift.
The Dexter Mill, today, just as in the past, is one of my favorite places to shop. Every time I go into the store it is like getting an education. I have learned how to prune shrubs, plant flowers and vegetable plants. You, too, can educate yourself in the store as to what type of birdseed to buy that will entice your favorite birds right into your own backyard. You can also browse through the special pet care locations throughout the store. All the employees are so helpful and knowledgeable in answering questions you may have, so don’t hesitate to ask. Pictured is our Oriole feeder which attracted a male and female so we are watching the grape jelly disappaer and they fly in and make their unique sounds and display that glorious orange color!
