Kathy Toth Co-Chairs Breast Cancer Charity Events

Ann Arbor charity auction and 5k walk benefit “Making Strides” campaignmaking strides silent auction invitation

Kathy Toth is best known as a prominent Ann Arbor Realtor, but she is also a breast cancer survivor who has endured the trials of the disease and the rigors of its treatment. For this reason, Toth takes the fight against breast cancer personally.

“I volunteer because I want to make a difference,” says Toth. “I want women to know that they’re not alone when facing this fight. They’re not alone if they’ve lost a loved one to cancer. These charity events allow us to show love and support to breast cancer patients and survivors. They give us a way to honor the memory of those we’ve lost to the disease. These events also provide funding for breast cancer research, and raise awareness of the need for early detection.”

The charity auction will be held Tuesday, October 14 at Suburban Chevrolet-Cadillac at 3515 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor, MI. The auction runs from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All proceeds from the event benefit the “Making Strides” campaign and the American Cancer Society.Ford Field 12

The “Making Strides” 5k walk will be held Saturday, October 18 at Washtenaw County Community College, at 4800 E. Huron River Drive, Ann Arbor, MI. Registration is at 8:00 a.m. and the non-competitive walk begins at 9:00 a.m. Online donations are also welcome. A special celebration tent will be on site to recognize breast cancer survivors.

“My gratitude goes out to all the businesses, families and individuals who are participating in these events,” says Kathy Toth. “Seeing our community come together for this worthy cause makes me proud to be an Ann Arbor resident. Every gesture, every donation, makes a positive impact. If you’re not already involved, Ford Field 1please join us!”

Ann Arbor Realtor Kathy Toth Among Breast Cancer Survivor Honorees

NFL pre-game Pink Ribbon Ceremony at Ford Field will recognize 62 breast cancer survivors; event part of breast cancer awareness campaign

Screen Shot 2014-10-03 at 6.38.24 AM

Kathy Toth will be among 62 women who will be honored during a Pink Ribbon Ceremony on Ford Field on October 5th, prior to the start of the Detroit Lions game. The ceremony is part of the Detroit Lions breast cancer awareness campaign, in partnership with the National Football League and the American Cancer Society.

October 5 is the Lions official “A Crucial Catch” game. The goal of the campaign is to stress the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

As part of the event, the 62 breast cancer survivors will participate in a pre-game yoga stretch, and be treated to a VIP brunch. They will have opportunities to participate in the Fan Tunnel. A breast cancer awareness flag will be displayed on the field prior to the game.

For Ann Arbor Realtor Kathy Toth, breast cancer awareness is a personal issue. After being diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer several years ago, she took aggressive measures to combat the disease.

“Breast cancer is a very personal, invasive and potentially deadly disease that women do not want to think about,” says Toth. “But the risk is real. Statistically, one woman out of every eight will be diagnosed with it. I can say from personal experience that early detection is the key to beating breast cancer.”

Toth further explains what breast cancer awareness campaigns mean to her. “When I think “awareness” it’s more than acknowledging that breast cancer exists. By awareness, I hope that women understand “this means you.” A mammogram could help save your life. It helped save mine.”

Kathy Toth and Team Tour The Charles Baird Carillon in Burton Memorial Tower on U of M Main Campus

20140925_103637Kathy Toth & Team toured the Charles Baird Carillon located in the Burton Memorial Tower on The University of Michigan central campus Thursday, 9.25.14.burton towerSeptember 25, 2014.  The tour was worth every minute. We all enjoyed hearing the history of the Carillon from Kipp Cortez, the University Carillonneur.

Charles Baird, a University of Michigan alumnus, and The University of Michigan’s first athletic director, donated the Bells to the University of Michigan. This amazing instrument,The Charles M. Baird Carillon, is one of the largest instruments in North America. 9.25.2014 kip cortez President Marian Burton, in his 1921 commencement address, suggested the erection of a bell tower to commemorate the 236 University students who lost their lives during World War I.  Four years after Marian Burton’s death in 1921 The Secretary of the University, Shirley Smith, revived the plan to Build the bell tower. With the onset of the Depression, plans were put on hold and then revived in 1935. Please read the full History of the Burton Memorial Tower.

Students and residents within earshot can hear the Largest Bell, the ‘Bourdon Bell’, strike the hour every day.  This bourdon bell weighs 12 tons.

University of Michigan Charles Baird Carillon Facts:

  1. Designed by Albert Kahn
  2. 212 Feet High Structure
  3. Total of 53 Bells the smallest bell 4 ½ octaves higher weighs 21 pounds.
  4. The Charles Baird Carillon was dedicated, December 4, 1936.
  5. The bells are housed on the tenth floor in a 40-foot high chamber that provides ample openings to maximize their sound.Carillon
  6. Carillons are instruments consisting of at least 2 full octaves – 24 bells in chromatic progression.
  7. The keyboard consists of wooden levers and foot pedals played with fists and feet.
  8. The levers connect to hammers inside the bell, when the levers are pressed the hammer strikes the bell and rings it.
  9. The bells are programmed to ring every quarter-hour. This takes us back to the Renaissance, when city-dwellers depended on church bells to tell time.

In 2011, the carillon underwent a complete restoration, returning the original highest two octaves of bells and the original clavier.

The University of Michigan is fortunate enough to not only have one Carillon, but two!  The University of Michigan added a second carillon in 1996 on North Campus. The Ann and Robert H. Lurie Carillon and consists of 60 bells. The Robert and Ann Lurie Carillon was a gift to the School of Engineering from the Robert and Ann Lurie Family Foundation, The Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry of Asten, The Netherlands, cast the bells. In any case, the carillons are unique and an important part of the Ann Arbor Community.

The next time you hear the bells, stop, listen, and enjoy hearing one of the largest instruments in North America.  Tomorrow bring your blankets, and capture the sound of the bells.

Kathy Toth & Team Tour “The Big House”

TourWhen Ann Arbor REALTOR® Kathy Toth needed a venue for a team-building activity, she thought “big.” She brought her agents and staff to Michigan Stadium for a guided tour on June 5, using the nation’s largest sports stadium to inspire her team.

Michigan Stadium isn’t just the largest stadium in the United States – it’s also the 3rd largest stadium in the world. With an official seating capacity of 109,901, it has hosted crowds as large as 115,109.

But what does college football have to do with real estate?M Club Banner

Kathy Toth takes inspiration from the words painted in the locker room hallway: “Those who stay will be champions.”

“Real estate is a challenging career,” Toth explained. “There are many people who enter this business thinking that it’s easy money. The reality is, real estate is a demanding field that requires your best effort with every client and every transaction. It’s more time-consuming and strategically-involved than most people realize.”

It’s also a business that requires tenacity and continual education. Toth gave another example. “In order for you to succeed and grow as a real estate professional, you must price and market each home effectively. You must help each buyer find what they need. You have to manage transaction details to make sure each closing happens as it should. At the same time, the market is always changing. You have to be able to plan well and think on your feet.”

As Kathy Toth and her team toured Michigan Stadium, they were also reminded of the economic benefits that the stadium brings to the Ann Arbor area. Recently renovated at a cost of $226 million, the stadium features state-of-the-art press boxes, score boards and amenities, and hosts collegiate football games as well as NHL hockey events.

“It’s one of the gems of Ann Arbor and the State of Michigan,” Toth says. “There’s a terrific financial impact to having over 100,000 people filling the seats for every game. Plus, a healthy local economy helps support home values!”

But what about football? “Go Wolverines!” Toth said. “I encourage our fellow residents to tour Michigan Stadium. Better yet, attend a game next season!”Locker Room 1
